Brenna whipped her head around to stare at Charlie as Matthew started coughing.

“What do you mean?” she inquired, afraid at what that meant.

“Mr. Burchard and I were talking about what he’d look for in a woman and I say the sooner he finds a bride, the faster he’ll settle down in Freedom.” Charlie teased as she noticed the look on Brenna’s face.

“I wasn’t aware Mr. Burchard was looking for a wife,” Brenna said tersely, as she turned to Matthew and waited for his response.

“I wasn’t, I mean, I’m not.” Matthew sputtered. “Now listen here, stop pushing your plans on me, Charlie. I’ll pick a bride in my own time when I’m ready to court a woman. I can find my own bride – someone who can cook, is kind and perhaps even has a child of her own. I don’t need your assistance.”

“Oh, you’re not opposed to a woman with a child? I’ll add that to my list,” taunted Charlie. She finished the last bite of her toast with jam and stood. “If you’ll excuse me, I believe I’m going to track down Carissa and see what’s on her agenda for today.”

Brenna stood awkwardly off to the side. She cleared her throat to tamp down the strangely uncomfortable thought of Matthew with another woman. “I didn’t know you were looking for a wife.” She tilted her head and looked at him. In defense of her employer, she added, “Charlie goes about things in the strangest ways but she does mean well.”

“I’m not in search of anything,” Matthew countered. “Please, believe me. I came here for coffee this morning and a bite to eat. I’m confused how this topic even came about.”

A satisfied smile wheedled its way onto her lips and she felt relief at his statement. Thank God, she thought, pressing a hand to her heart. She’d only met him a few days ago, but she was enjoying the smile he brought to her face each morning when he came for breakfast. Now that she knew he’d be close by, mining with Eddie and Silas, she hoped to run into him more often to learn more about the man.

“Before you go, I packed a lunch to take with you.” She grinned at the look of confusion on Matthew’s face. “I bet you don’t know if Eddie has supplies for lunch, do you? Experience tells me he hasn’t thought that far ahead. His thoughts are consumed with finding gold.” She laughed. “My husband used to bring several sandwiches for lunch for the both of them. Mining uses a lot of energy and you’ll need to replenish your body throughout the day with nourishment.”

“That was mighty kind of you to pack a lunch. You know better than I do what a miner might be hungry for at midday.”

Brenna hoped he’d like what she made. “I’ll be right back with your lunch.”

Matthew watched her scurry into the kitchen and return with a giant sack. “Did you include food for Silas? I don’t want your son to go hungry.
