Brenna whipped her head around to stare at Charlie as Matthew started coughing.
âWhat do you mean?â she inquired, afraid at what that meant.
âMr. Burchard and I were talking about what heâd look for in a woman and I say the sooner he finds a bride, the faster heâll settle down in Freedom.â Charlie teased as she noticed the look on Brennaâs face.
âI wasnât aware Mr. Burchard was looking for a wife,â Brenna said tersely, as she turned to Matthew and waited for his response.
âI wasnât, I mean, Iâm not.â Matthew sputtered. âNow listen here, stop pushing your plans on me, Charlie. Iâll pick a bride in my own time when Iâm ready to court a woman. I can find my own bride â someone who can cook, is kind and perhaps even has a child of her own. I donât need your assistance.â
âOh, youâre not opposed to a woman with a child? Iâll add that to my list,â taunted Charlie. She finished the last bite of her toast with jam and stood. âIf youâll excuse me, I believe Iâm going to track down Carissa and see whatâs on her agenda for today.â
Brenna stood awkwardly off to the side. She cleared her throat to tamp down the strangely uncomfortable thought of Matthew with another woman. âI didnât know you were looking for a wife.â She tilted her head and looked at him. In defense of her employer, she added, âCharlie goes about things in the strangest ways but she does mean well.â
âIâm not in search of anything,â Matthew countered. âPlease, believe me. I came here for coffee this morning and a bite to eat. Iâm confused how this topic even came about.â
A satisfied smile wheedled its way onto her lips and she felt relief at his statement. Thank God, she thought, pressing a hand to her heart. Sheâd only met him a few days ago, but she was enjoying the smile he brought to her face each morning when he came for breakfast. Now that she knew heâd be close by, mining with Eddie and Silas, she hoped to run into him more often to learn more about the man.
âBefore you go, I packed a lunch to take with you.â She grinned at the look of confusion on Matthewâs face. âI bet you donât know if Eddie has supplies for lunch, do you? Experience tells me he hasnât thought that far ahead. His thoughts are consumed with finding gold.â She laughed. âMy husband used to bring several sandwiches for lunch for the both of them. Mining uses a lot of energy and youâll need to replenish your body throughout the day with nourishment.â
âThat was mighty kind of you to pack a lunch. You know better than I do what a miner might be hungry for at midday.â
Brenna hoped heâd like what she made. âIâll be right back with your lunch.â
Matthew watched her scurry into the kitchen and return with a giant sack. âDid you include food for Silas? I donât want your son to go hungry.
